REVIEWS

“Flying a trainer kite is a step in learning to kiteboard that is unfortunately, often skimmed over. The stress-free time spent learning about wind direction, the wind window and building muscle memory makes the advanced steps much easier. Leading Edge Productions now offers a popular 2-meter two-line kite and includes a companion DVD. The video shows how to set up the kite prior to launch, describes the wind window and talks about kite control to get you started.”
James Brown, The Kiteboarder Magazine

“The Leading Edge trainer is the smoothest foil trainer I have ever flown, and I have been flying kites for over 30 years.”
Mark Vincent

"What I really liked about LEP trainer was how similar it felt to modern bridle or hybrid kite. I think that is really important for people learning, so that they make the connection between 2m kite skills and 10m kite skills, instead of thinking of a trainer kite as only a mandatory step to get to the big kites."
Chris Hunter

“I flew the kite on a light wind day and when it became kiteable, I almost didn’t want to land it I was having so much fun!”
Shawn Rosta

"This kite is truly the "Leading Edge" of all the trainers I’ve used for instructing. Very powerfull, the Leading Edge trainer is both fun and easy to fly."
Dean Walton, IKO certified instructor

“We use these kites in our school to help prepare our beginner students for their lessons.  They are super easy to set up, and are really fun to fly. Everyone should put many hours on a trainer kite before their lessons, it will save you time and money”
Marie Leclerc, IKO certified instructor

“The Leading Edge trainer  kite is great for learning kite control, but the best times I’ve  had on it were on my skateboard, cruising the parking lot without having to put my foot down to push."
Mark Bavis

"Kiteboarding safely and consciously are the most important skills any new kiter can learn…period.  This video gives future kiters a solid understanding of not only the basic concepts of how to control a kite, but also offers a beginning into understanding the wind.  The better the foundation of control and the better you can understand and evaluate the wind… the better your experience will be.  Watching Trainer Kite Bootcamp and mastering the trainer kite are definitely steps in the right direction!"
Dale Moffatt

LESSON PLAN

LESSON PLAN

The “My Session – Volume 1” Kiteboarding instructional DVD starts by discussing some general characteristics of wind, like speed and direction.  Then it compares different kites based on aspect ratio, de-power, re-launch, and safety.   Then, Marie Leclerc & Mark Bavis  introduce you to the wind window and basic kite control.   Here they use a Kiteboarding trainer kite to go over the basic flying skills, and kite positions.  The video then focuses on the basics of rigging which includes pumping up your kite, and laying out your lines.  During your lessons your instructor show you how to rig the kite you will be actually flying, we just want to introduce you to the process and give you some general tips. Then we coach you through the basic steps of both assisted, and self-launching techniques. Finally, we walk you into the water, for your first downwind body drag.  After a few downwind body drags, the focus then moves to body dragging upwind.  Learning to body drag upwind, before using the board, will give you the confidence, and kite control needed to move on to the next step, the waterstart.   Once you can waterstart and are up and riding, we go over basic stance, hand and kite positions – for all  types of wind conditions. Then we show you the basics of how to turn around on a twin tip.  From here we show you the basics of water re-launching the kite and the lesson ends with assisted landing, and self rescue.

 GENERAL TIPS

  • master the trainer kite
  • take lessons, from a certified instructor
  • wear a helmet and PFD, especially when using a board leash
  • learn to body drag upwind, before trying the board
  • test your safety system, before you need it
  • pay attention, and use common sense
  • be concerned about safety, and always respect the power of the wind
  • never go further than your willing to swim
  • never ride alone
  • starboard has the right of way
  • the upwind rider flies their kite high, and the downwind rider flies their kite low
  • kites being launched have right of way
